Sri Lanka is facing one of the most severe flood emergencies in recent years, with over 1.1 million people sheltering in 1,500+ safety centres. Communities are grieving 355 reported deaths and 366 missing persons, as multiple districts continue to struggle with wide-scale devastation.
Despite breached reservoirs, cut-off GN divisions, and 24-hour telecom blackouts, national authorities, UN agencies, INGOs, and partners are working non-stop to reach stranded families.
ChildFund Sri Lanka has already verified the safety of 8,232 sponsored children. Of them, 3,852 are directly affected, 440 are displaced, and 2,452 remain unreachable due to damaged roads and network failures. Protection concerns are rising, with overcrowded shelters and children showing signs of distress.
In response, ChildFund has activated Phase 1 emergency actions across five priority districts – providing child protection and psychosocial support, education continuity, child-sensitive NFIs, food aid, and safe drinking water. LKR 15 million (approx. USD 49,000) has already been deployed, supporting urgent distributions and evacuation efforts.
With the national humanitarian response now activated, ChildFund continues to play a key role in coordination and advocacy for stronger child-centred action. However, urgent gaps remain.
ChildFund is seeking support to continue life-saving interventions for children and families, including:
• Child protection & psychosocial support
• Education continuity
• Child-sensitive Non - Food Items
• Food security assistance
• Safe drinking water & WASH support
